“THE AWAKENING OF MISS PRIM”, BY NATALIA SANMARTIN
julio 16, 2014
When Miss Prim, an independent, accomplished young woman reads an ad in the newspaper seeking a feminine spirit
to work as a librarian in the lush countryside of San Ireneo
de Arnois for a gentleman and his books, she finds herself
compelled to apply. Little does she know that she is stepping
into a flourishing colony of exiles who have fled the modern world looking for a more simple, rural existence.
Miss Prim dutifully accepts the job and begins organizing her employer’s vast library. A knowledgeable, mysterious man with very specific opinions about life, he challenges Miss Prim’s seemingly unshakeable disposition. As she becomes familiar with the other townspeople, the surprising lifestyle that dominates the town awakens amazement, perplexity, and even disdain in her. For in this tiny corner of the world, manufacturing is local, business moves at a leisurely pace, and work days are kept at a strict six hours to allow time for the finer activities of life: reading great literary works, partaking in intellectual discussions, enjoying family, and indulging in delectable sweets. Little by little, their peculiar and unconventional ways test Miss Prim’s world vision, her most intimate ideas and fears, and her most profound convictions. She quickly comes to the realization that her advanced degrees did little to prepare her for the lessons she’s being taught.
Over time, she finds her deepest beliefs shaken: she has developed an intimate fondness for her employer – a man set in his ways and not one prone to falling over himself for love. Hence, her journey to discover what she really desires for her life reaches a pivotal point.
Set against a backdrop of steaming cups of tea, freshly baked cakes, warm fires and lovely company, The Awakening of Miss Prim is a thought provoking, stimulating and sensitive novel that gives rise to refreshing theories about love and companionship, education, and the beauty of every passing moment.
